In episode 103 of the Growth Series podcast, Nicola Alvarez, Senior Manager Proposition Development at Accord Mortgages, speaks to Megha Srivastava, National Account Manager at Twenty7Tec, Rachel Edwards, Senior Policy Advisor at the Association of Mortgage Intermediaries, and Dom Scott, Managing Director at Lifetime Connect, about the benefits of mentoring.
During the discussion, Dom talks about how mentoring can help people gain insights and context that helps to refine their own decision-making process and reach their aspirations. Megha agrees, describing a good mentor as a friendly and supportive guide who can help a person learn and grow. Rachel, meanwhile, adds that mentoring doesn’t have to be too formal and rigid, and can be anything you need it to be as long as it’s helpful.
The conversation then turns to the qualities that strong mentors need, and Rachel says she believes self-awareness is really important, as the best ones understand their own capabilities and limitations. She also notes that every mentee will need to be dealt with differently, so they must also be adaptable and have excellent communications skills.
Next, Nicola asks how a person can find the right mentor, and Megha states that a person must have a specific goal in mind, so they can reach out to suitable people in their network who can help them achieve it.
The group goes on to discuss reverse mentoring, when someone in a senior role reaches out to someone newer in the industry. Rachel says this enables the person at the top to learn from someone in a junior role and discover new ways of marketing their business, using technology, helping the environment and embracing EDI. Dom adds that reverse mentoring can help older people gain an insight into how young people are living today and keep their judgment relevant and useful to others.
