Richard shares how a temporary data entry role turned into a turning point, eventually leading him into mortgage advice. What began as a reluctant entry into the sector grew into a vocation built around helping people, connecting with customers and supporting advisers. His path shows how careers don’t always follow the plans we set, but often end up in the places where we’re meant to be.
Through the conversation, Richard reflects on the moment he realised mortgage advice wasn’t about numbers, but about people and the life-changing milestones they’re trying to achieve. It’s something that continues to shape how he leads today. His time away from Alexander Hall taught him to stretch himself, take on tougher responsibilities and return with a clearer sense of maturity and purpose.
Jeremy and Richard explore leadership, mentoring and the responsibility leaders have in creating environments where advisers can grow. Richard talks about the importance of surrounding yourself with people who think differently, the value of diverse teams and the role of listening in bringing out the best in others. His involvement with AMI and the Green Mortgage Advice Initiative comes from the same place, a desire to support the industry that supported him.
Away from the office, Richard gives listeners a glimpse into the passions that keep him grounded. From travelling to gigs across Europe to following football with total devotion; live experiences play a huge part in how he recharges.
